The Fundamentals of Islamic Belief: A Beginner’s Guide

1. Belief in Allah

Muslims believe in the oneness of Allah, the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. We believe that Allah has no partners or equals, and He alone deserves our worship and obedience.

“Say, He is Allah, [who is] One, Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.”

Surah Al-Ikhlas 112:1-4

2. Belief in the Prophets

Muslims believe that Allah sent messengers and prophets to guide humanity, and we believe in all of them. From the first prophet, Adam, to the last prophet and messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon them all), we affirm that all the prophets were chosen by Allah to convey His message and to guide humanity to the right path.

“And We have sent you (O Muhammad) not but as a mercy for the worlds.”

Surah Al-Anbiya 21:107

3. Belief in the Holy Books

Muslims believe that Allah revealed divine guidance to humanity through a series of prophets and that the message of all these prophets was essentially the same. This guidance is recorded in various holy books, including the Quran, the Torah, the Psalms, and the Gospel. Muslims believe that the Quran is the final and most complete revelation from Allah, and it supersedes all previous revelations. The Quran provides guidance on all aspects of life, including beliefs, worship, and morality.

“This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah.”

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:2

4. Belief in the Angels

Muslims believe in the existence of angels, who are created by Allah to carry out His commands. We believe that angels are not capable of disobedience, and they carry out their duties with absolute obedience to Allah.

“They (the angels) glorify Him night and day, they do not flag.”

Surah Al-Anbiya 21:20

5. Belief in the Day of Judgment

Muslims believe that there will be a Day of Judgment when Allah will judge every person according to their deeds. We believe that every soul will be held accountable for their actions and that those who have done good deeds will be rewarded with Paradise, while those who have done evil will be punished in Hell.

“We shall set up scales of justice for the Day of Judgment so that not a soul will be dealt with unjustly in the least, and if there be (no more than) the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it (to account): and enough are We to take account.”

Surah Al-Anbiya 21:47

6. Belief in Qadr (Destiny)

Muslims believe in the divine concept of Qadr (destiny) and that everything, good or bad, happens according to the will of Allah. We believe that Allah has complete knowledge of everything that has happened and everything that will happen in the universe. Our lives and our destinies are in Allah’s hands, and we have free will to make choices within the boundaries that He has set for us. Muslims believe that Allah is the ultimate source of guidance and blessings, and we should strive to do good deeds and follow His commands to seek His pleasure and mercy.

“Verily, We have created all things with Qadr (Divine Preordainment).”

Surah Al-Qamar 54:49
